Until June 2017 I worked for twelve years as the Managing Editor of Political Studies – the flagship journal of the Political Studies Association – and Political Studies Review (PSR). For the last six of those years I was based at the University of Nottingham working alongside the editorial team led by Professor Chris Pierson.
In July 2017 the journals moved from Nottingham to a new editorial team based at the University of Sheffield, and I became free to expand my scope beyond journal articles to full-length books and PhD theses as well.
Here are some of the comments I received in relation to my work for Political Studies:
Could I say that you have been by far the best editor that I have had the pleasure to work with in 20 years of publishing.
Professor Paul Chaisty, co-author of "Citizens’ Attitudes towards Institutional Change in Contexts of Political Turbulence: Support for Regional Decentralisation in Ukraine".
Many thanks for reading this through so carefully. Having myself been a journal editor for 10 years, I know all too well how important the careful reading of text is at the final stages of production, and also how little it is typically acknowledged by authors or by anyone else, so I am truly grateful.
Professor Sarah Birch, co-author of "Anger, Anxiety and Corruption Perceptions: Evidence from France".
For many within the Political Studies and PSR communities, the journals have become synonymous with the name of their Managing Editor, Rene Bailey. The journals would not be where they are today without Rene’s commitment, professionalism and passion. Contributors and editors consistently express praise and gratitude for the work she has done to enhance the quality of publications while keeping the production wheels turning as quickly and as smoothly as possible. This issue marks the end of Rene’s 12 years of service to PS and PSR. We are very grateful for her tremendous support during the transition phase and aspire to maintain the excellent standards she has set for Political Studies.

I cut my teeth on the journal Planning Theory & Practice, the journal of the Royal Town Planning Institute, when it was being edited from the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the University of Sheffield.
As well as copy-editing and proof-reading I was responsible for managing the peer review process – using photocopies and Royal Mail in the days before electronic peer review.
